The Long, Hard Road: Internship Search
Many of the majors in Human and Health Sciences require students to complete one or more internships throughout their 4 years. As a sophomore I obviously slacked off and did not even start looking for an internship until April, which was not a very good move. As a junior, I learned from my mistake and started searching for an internship in October. I attended every career fair that had professionals in the fields I was interested in, I attended 5 fairs. From the fairs I got very good leads and sometimes even interviews, but I never heard back after the first interview except for the email that says “you have very good qualities and we are sure you will be very successful, however [insert company name] is pursuing other candidates”. I thought to myself, “I must be a terrible interviewer because a lot of my friends were getting second interviews or job offers”. It was already the end of February and I did not have any hopes of an internship and all the fears of having to work for my dad, yet again. It was two weeks before spring break and I received an email from a company, I had forgotten that I went on the internet in January and applied to every company on Monster. I read the email and they wanted me to fill out a questionnaire for them, so I thought very hard about my answers to make sure it would leave a good impression. The next week the company contacted me to go up to Chicago and have an interview with them; I was very excited so I obviously accepted. I studied the company for two days before the interview and was very well prepared for the interview. On the day of the interview I was not nervous at all and I thought I did a very good job in the interviews. The very next Tuesday I got a call from the company and they said if I pass a back ground check I will be offered the job. I passed the check and last Friday I was offered the job! My search was finally over! My advice to all of the students out there is to start early and do some company searching on your own and don’t solely rely on the CCO to help you.

The 2011 Purdue Fashion Show
This past Saturday was the annual Purdue Fashion Show. Between the afternoon and evening shows, attendance was nearly 2,000! It was two hours of gorgeous models and gorgeous fashion. Best of all, as a senior I got to have a portion of the show dedicated to my very own collection. I showed nine outfits that I have been designing and producing since last July. There was so much work and anticipation leading up to April 2nd, but now that it's over I couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. My collection, "Stay with me, go places." was inspired largely by my heritage in the Midwest and by items relating to the history of everything I love about this land. My fabrics included eco-knits made of hemp, soy and organic cotton along with leather, denim, linen and cotton twills. I worked these awesome textiles into simple, comfortable silhouettes with lots of fun detailing. T-shirts were silkscreened with topographic prints or illustrated with field guide images and all of the models were decked out in vi
ntage boyscout and camping equipment. (More pictures on my website, Base14.com) I intended for this body of work to be a statement about this particular time in my life- the visible intersection between where I have been and the path I am about to take. -Alysha Kupferer

On March 24th I along with 500 other Purdue students, partook in the 4th Annual Nearly Naked Mile clothing drive. It gives students an opportunity to donate clothing-or even the shirt off their back- to the Lafayette Transitional Housing. Participants are able to walk, run, skip, or even hop around campus in crazy costumes to support this cause. It’s not every day you get to see Lady Gaga, the Power Rangers, and Spiderman running in a heard of students. I cannot imagine what was going through peoples mind when watching this event. At the end of the race, we were all rewarded with a pizza party at the Dick and Sandy Alumni Center. Note: this picture was on the front cover of a local newspaper. If you look closely behind the student government supporter, you will see me in a lime green shirt!

Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I have had time to write, this semester has been so crazy! I am taking 20 credit hours, working on my undergraduate thesis, trying to pin down a placement for my internship for next spring and balance my work, homework, extra curricular activities and leadership positions, friends, family and boyfriend- it's A LOT!
I think that this semester has by far been my busiest and the time seems to be flying away. I can't believe it's already been two weeks since spring break, and that there are only a few more weeks left until finals. During spring break, my boyfriend and I went with a few friends to Chicago for a few days. We stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel, saw Blue Man group and shopped on Michigan ave. It was so much fun and I wish I was back there right now. The week back from spring break was definitely a hard one, but once I was back I received two letters telling me that I have received two more scholarships- needless to say the news picked up my week = )
Other than that I have been busy with school work and fighting senioritis. I am only a Junior, but because I am double majoring I will be taking my very last final exam EVER in a few weeks! (Unless you count the two summer classes that I have left to take- but other than that I will be done with class!) I am really excite for student teaching as well. I found out my placement the week after spring break and have been talking to my head teachers about it already. I am also applying for an internship position in the spring, which has been pretty stressful in and of itself.
I can't wait for the next few weeks to fly by and for this semester to settle down so that I can start to enjoy summer with my friends, boyfriend and family. I am also planning on studying abroad in Amsterdam this summer for a week, so I CAN'T WAIT for that! = )
I think that's it for now, I hope that there won't be such a large gap between now and my next post! Hope everyone has a wonderful end to their semester and kicks off to a great summer!

Blue Man Group
Hey guys! So last week my roommates and I went to see the Blue Man Group perform at Elliott Hall of Music! It was my first time seeing them live. I had heard so many good things about them from others, I just had to go and see them for myself. Let me just say, they were absolutely amazing! They always kept me guessing and I was laughing and dancing the whole performance. It was pretty much the best $20 I have ever spent! Also, last week I got the privilege of meeting President Cordova during a meeting about the new college! It was an awesome experience because it was my first time meeting the President and she was an amazing lady. All this past weeks excitement has lead up to what I have been waiting for since the beginning of the semester! SPRING BREAK! I am so ready to just go home and relax and hang out with my family and our new puppy, Macy! But I’m sure I will end up working on figuring out which graduate schools I want to apply to and write my personal statement. Well, that’s been about all I’ve been up to lately besides homework and studying!

Fashion Week 2011
I entered through the doors and it was if I’d never left. Familiar faces of design team members greeted me, welcoming the assistance; new intern faces greeted me with questioning glances. We worked until the late hours, stitching away at hems, cutting geometric shapes for glove cuffs, attaching buttons, and helping in any other way possible.
My return to NYC was elongated compared to my visit in September – I took five days off to source more fabric and trims for my senior collection, help out at Cynthia Rowley prior to the show, and to work the runway show backstage on February 11, 2011.
It still all flew by quite quickly. I spent two full evenings and one whole day with CR and the rest of the time running around the garment district with my checklist. The city was the same as it will always be – fast paced, business oriented, and a culture overload. But I loved it nonetheless. I obtained everything necessary to complete my collection, met with good friends I’d gone to school at F.I.T. with, and was able to assist with a great group of individuals in the completion of a splendid, dimensional collection.

Looking forward to Spain!
Only 88 days until I leave the United States for my summer study abroad trip to Madrid! (I’m not counting down the days or anything…) Last week all 30 of us Purdue students got together with our Spanish professor Ana Gomez-Bravo for an info session about where we’re going to be spending our summer! Madrid is the capitol of Spain, and it is filled with historic monuments, parks, plazas, shopping districts, and museums. I can’t wait to spend six weeks taking classes and exploring the city! We plan on leaving at the end of May, and we’ll be living in Madrid until the middle of July.
I will have the opportunity to take 6 credit hours in two classes – the Art of the Prado and Spanish Food and Culture. We’ll learn all about Spanish artists while exploring the Prado Museum in Madrid. And from Professor Gomez-Bravo herself will be the experience of cooking Spanish food and tasting new ingredients. My “Art of the Prado” class will take place at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, which is one of the top ten universities in Spain.
We’ll all be living in the homes of Spanish families during our stay, which is exciting for me! I know some students who are apprehensive about the experience, but I think it’ll be an amazing to gain that sort of familiarity with natives of the city and to be completely immersed in their culture and language and food. I imagine that my Spanish speaking skills will be much more honed by the time I return to the States!
My credit gained through this experience will count toward my Spanish minor, but the knowledge that I will gain from this is much more extensive than just the language. By living as a student in a foreign country, I will be able to soak in so much of the culture and reach a new level of understanding of the people there. Being there for a long period of time can get me past a surface-level exposure to the city and the country – much better than the normal tourist experience! What I hope to gain most from this adventure is a summer of awesome memories from learning by immersion in one of the most vibrant cultures in the world.
